A Mom's Guide to Smoother Mornings: How I Prep for the Day Ahead with a Toddler
If I've learned anything these since becoming a Mom, it's that mornings with a toddler can be chaotic and stressful without a plan in place. After a lot of trial and error, I realized pretty quick that the more I can do the night before, the less I’m scrambling the next morning trying to clean up, find what we need, make breakfast, and somehow drink a cup of coffee before the chaos starts up again.
What I refuse to do is spend my entire evening cleaning, scrubbing and prepping because that's my time to relax, too. I’ve gotten into the habit of doing a few small things at night that make a surprisingly big difference the next day.
Some nights I get through all of them. Other nights? Definitely not. But even getting a few of these items checked off my list the night before helps me wake up to a house that feels a little more under control and a day that already feels easier to tackle. Most importantly (to me), I can spend my morning relaxing with my little one for us to enjoy the start of the day together.

1. Clean the Kitchen Tonight for a Fresh Start Tomorrow
There’s something about waking up to a clean kitchen that makes the whole morning feel a little more manageable. I try to tackle the dishes and clear the countertops every night. The nights when I Ioad the dishwasher, clear the sink, put away anything left on the counters, and give everything a quick wipe down make me feel like I accomplished my goal.
I’m definitely not deep cleaning my kitchen every night. I just want to be able to walk downstairs in the morning and start breakfast and coffee without yesterday’s mess waiting for me.

2. Prep the Coffee & Breakfast
Coffee is a morning necessity around here, so I get the coffee maker ready to go the night before. One less thing to think about when I’m still half asleep!
I also think about what we’re having for breakfast and prep anything I can ahead of time. This isn't elaborate meal prep — sometimes it's simply making sure I know what we're having and have everything we need.
Those few minutes at night save me from standing in the kitchen the next morning wondering what I’m going to make while everyone is already hungry.

3. Get a Load of Laundry Going
Laundry with a toddler somehow feels never-ending, so I try to stay one step ahead when I can. I'll either put together a pile of the clothes for my morning load or I'll run a load of laundry in the washer to switch to the dryer in the morning.
This small step not only gets the laundry finished quicker, but it also encourages me to continue the laundry in the morning.
Sometimes just getting the laundry started is the win.

4. Quick Toy Pick Up to Clear the Way for a Clean Floor
By the end of the day, there are usually toys and random things from the day scattered throughout the house. Before I can run the vacuum, I need to get everything off the floor.
I spend a few minutes tossing toys back into their baskets, bins, or cabinets for a fresh start tomorrow. It just feels good to wake up to a clean and clutter free floor at the start of the day.
Having efficient toy storage makes this SO much faster.

5. Run the Robot Vacuum & Mop
Once the toys are off the floor, it's time for one of my favorite nighttime shortcuts.
Every night before bed, I run my Roborock robot vacuum and mop downstairs. Between a toddler, a dog, crumbs, and everyday messes, our floors can get dirty incredibly fast.
While we’re sleeping, it takes care of the floors for me. There is something so satisfying about coming downstairs in the morning to clean floors without having to spend my evening vacuuming and mopping them myself.
It’s one less chore waiting for me the next day, and it instantly makes the downstairs feel more put together.

6. Check Tomorrow’s Plans & Get Things Ready
Before I settle in for the night, I check my phone calendar and see what we actually have going on the next day.
If we’re heading somewhere, I try to get whatever we’ll need ready ahead of time — clothes, the diaper bag, snacks, or anything that needs to make it out the door with us.
It sounds simple, but not having to run around searching for things while also trying to get a toddler ready is a major morning win.

7. Always End the Day on a Positive Note
Let's be honest, being a Mom to a toddler is hard work with very little breaks (but SO many rewards). Even though we love them more than life itself, the days can be busy, exhausting and stressful.
I’ve realized that preparing for tomorrow isn’t only about getting the house ready. It's also about giving myself a little mental reset after each day. Before I go to bed, I try to let go of whatever didn’t get done and focus on something good from the day.
I can always say I'm grateful for the sweet moments I share with my daughter, or simply reminding myself how lucky I am to be her Mom.
And if tomorrow morning still turns into chaos? Hey, at least the floors are clean.
You've got this, mama!
