Five Little Ducks First Birthday Party Ideas

One thing I would definitely recommend when planning a first birthday is to think about the adults when choosing your location.

We chose to have my daughter's first birthday at a winery. At this age, a first birthday party is really just as much for the adults as it is for the baby. Most of our guests were adults or parents with young children, so I wanted somewhere the adults could enjoy themselves while the kids still had plenty to do.

The winery gave us a beautiful setting and then I brought in kid-friendly activities like the photo booth, craft station and bubbles.

You don't necessarily need a traditional children's party venue for a first birthday. Find a location that works for your guest list, make sure it's welcoming to children, and then bring the kid-friendly fun to the venue.

We went with a pond-inspired cake with blue icing for the water, green icing for the grass, flowers around the outside, and of course, five little yellow ducks swimming on top. To give the cake a 3D feel, I purchased yellow rubber ducks to "swim" on top of the cake and asked the bake shop to create a pond appearance on the cake. 

Since this was my daughter's 1st birthday, we also had a matching smash cake just for the birthday girl, complete with its own little yellow duck on top. It was such a cute way to carry the theme through to one of the best first-birthday traditions — letting the birthday girl dig into her very own cake!

I loved that both cakes were clearly Five Little Ducks without being overly complicated. The little rubber ducks really made them feel special.

For the decorations, I used a mix of Five Little Ducks-themed pieces and solid blue and yellow party supplies to bring everything together.

Some of the decorations I used included:

• Five Little Ducks Banners
• Duck-themed napkins
• A large inflatable duck
• Little rubber ducks scattered throughout the party
• Blue tablecloths or runners as the "pond"
• Yellow and blue balloons or duck balloons
• Duck footprints leading guests into the party
• Five Little Duck centerpieces for tables
• "Quack" Signs throughout the party

For the plates, I actually chose solid blue and yellow instead of the plates with duck images on them. The solid-colored plates were sturdier, and they still worked perfectly with the theme. This is one of those little practical things you don't necessarily think about until you're actually planning the party!

I also scattered little rubber ducks around different areas instead of keeping all of the duck decorations in one place. Between the ducks, banner, napkins and pops of blue and yellow, the theme carried throughout the party without everything needing to be an exact matching set.

A ducky photo booth was a fun activity that both the kids and adults could enjoy.

I set out duck-themed photo props with a “Say Quack! It’s Photo Time!” sign so everyone could grab a prop and take pictures throughout the party. There was nothing structured about it, which made it perfect for a first birthday. Guests could stop by whenever they wanted and take a few fun pictures.

It was also a great way to get some memorable photos from the day without needing to hire or set up an elaborate photo booth.

For the kids, I created a Five Little Ducks craft and coloring station where they could sit down and make something whenever they wanted.

I made Five Little Ducks coloring pages using AI and put them out with markers. I also had plain white duckies that the kids could decorate themselves with the markers, which gave them another little craft to do.

I loved this activity because kids of different ages could participate, it didn't require someone to run the activity the entire time, and the kids have a little a fun gift to take home with them. Everything was set out and ready for them whenever they wanted to create something.

Another activity I included was a bubble station, because bubbles and little kids are pretty much always a good combination.

I set out bubbles so the kids could grab them and play outside throughout the party. It gave them something active to do and worked especially well with our indoor/outdoor venue.

I also liked having a mix of activities. The craft table gave the kids something quieter to do, while the bubbles gave them a chance to get outside and move around.

And for a first birthday, the activities really don't have to be complicated. A few easy options that kids can move between on their own worked perfectly for us.

I wanted both the kids and the adults to leave with a little something, so I made different favors for each.

For the adult favors, I included:

• A loofah
• Travel-size body wash
• Candy

For the children's favors, I included:

• Bubbles in a ducky container
• A ducky paint-by-number activity
• An animal loofah
• Johnson & Johnson travel-size body wash
• Toddler-safe Candy

To make the favor display part of the decorations, I put the favors inside the large inflatable duck and added a sign that said:

“Rub-a-Dub-Dub — A Treat for Your Tub!”

I loved how this turned something as simple as handing out favors into another fun part of the Five Little Ducks theme.
